                                 How far Can you See
                                 (Magnification)

Look at your binoculars. Somewhere on them will be a pair of numbers separated by a small X.

For example, 7x35 or 8x32.

The first number is the magnification or power of the binoculars.

If this first number is a 7, then the bird you are looking at will appear 7 times closer
than if you were just looking at it without the binoculars.

                  Is a greater magnification better?
                  Surprisingly, not necessarily!

The lower the magnification, the brighter the bird and the wider area you can see.

As you magnify more, less light comes through and the area is narrower that you see.

You will also notice more wobbles if your hands or arms are not steady or if you are looking at birds from a moving car or boat.

Binoculars normally come in 7x, 8x, and 10x magnifications.

Consider a 10x only if you are able to locate and follow birds quickly with your binoculars and your hands will be steady.

Remember, the lower the number, the less apparent are wobbles,
the image will be Brighter, and the more area you will be able to see.
